People first. Always.

I am running for the House of Representatives to fight for South Dakota families. I know what it’s like to struggle to make ends meet, to stretch to put food on the table, and to delay a doctor visit because of the cost. As a Registered Nurse and mother, I spend my time caring for others and I want to be part of the solution for the people I love and the community we share.

The cost of living in South Dakota has risen sharply while wages have stayed flat. Sadly, our state and federal government has failed to address this cost of living crisis and working families are being squeezed.

I will work hard in Pierre and fight for working people so families can thrive, young people have real opportunity, and workers are respected and supported.

We can build a better future here in South Dakota and protect what matters most: fair wages, quality education, affordable and accessible healthcare, and opportunity for the next generation.

Together, we can:

  • Support working families with affordable child care, parental leave, and the dignity of a living wage.

  • Create good-paying jobs, strengthen unions and support opportunities for young people, whether they pursue college or skilled trades.

  • Strengthen Public Education and say no to voucher programs that weaken our public schools, support fair pay for teachers and ensure affordable higher education.

  • Protect healthcare access and reproductive freedom.

  • Advocate for affordable housing for all South Dakotans

I need your support to send a working mom, a nurse and a fighter for working families to Pierre.

-House Minority Leader Erin Healy

South Dakota District 10 Representative

About me.

I know first hand the struggles of working families.

I was born and raised by my single mom in Sioux Falls. After graduating from Lincoln High School, I put higher education on hold and went to work full time, earning $5.75 per hour. I was 19-years-old when I became pregnant with my first child. Being very young, uninsured, and earning minimum wage, Medicaid coverage became a lifeline. Thankfully, I was also able to receive WIC benefits to help me put nutritious food on the table, and low-income subsidized housing gave us the stability of a safe place to live.

When my son was in preschool, I enrolled at the University of South Dakota to pursue a degree in nursing, which launched me into a successful career caring for people. My husband took his turn next, earning his graduate degree in Biology from USD. Neither of us would have been able to access these life changing educational programs without the federal Pell grants that helped pay for tuition.

I have worked as a Registered Nurse in Sioux Falls for 14 years, doing what I do best, putting people first. My husband develops treatments for rare diseases, impacting so many who have lost hope. We are raising our two children in the community that gave us a solid foundation to succeed. I am so proud of the life we’ve built and the family we share.

Without healthcare access, educational opportunities, and affordable housing, my family would not be where we are today, paying back what the tax payers invested in us and contributing to our community. These fundamentals are crucial to an upwardly mobile society.

Putting people first makes common sense and is just good policy.

Now, it is my turn to give back to the people of South Dakota and advocate for working families and the next generation.

“Kathleen Brudvig is exactly what Pierre needs. A mom, a nurse and a problem solver. She will not just be a fighter for the people of District 10, but a credit to their judgment as well.”
